The Bay (2012) – A New Movie Review

Are you a horror fan?

Every once in a while you get completely blown away by a movie. “The Bay“, not the most shocking title, I know, knocked my socks off. So I just had to write you guys and gals and give you a heads up. Best part, you don’t even have to leave home – it’s on HBOmax.

Found Footage Flicks

I’ve grown to like them when they are done well, and it’s no “Blair Witch”, trust me. Anyway, it takes place in the town of Claridge, MD, where a negligent mayor and EPA fail to warn the townspeople of an impending outbreak of sorts. The critters that unleash holy hell on the poor residents of Claridge are freaky as #*%!. They don’t skimp on all the bloody gory details either. Let me put it this way: the overgrown parasites’ favorite snack is human tongues. Yeah, it’s like that.

The Bay (2012)?

So where the hell have I been? “The Bay” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012. It features a cast that I’ve never heard of or seen before, lending the found footage aspect of the film an air of authenticity. Directed by Barry Levinson and written by Michael Wallach – where did these guys come from? Barry Levinson’s most notable movies are comedies like, “Envy”, starring Jack Black, so it’s even more puzzling where this horror masterpiece came from.

No Spoilers (I’ll try)

A steamy 4th of July in a quaint little town. The stage is set for a lovely day of festivities in the town’s square, and then all hell starts breaking loose. People are sick and dying everywhere, and the situation is quickly out of control. The warning signs were all there, but in typical fashion, the powers at be are more concerned with saving face than handling the situation. The culprit: a mutated parasitic organism, that no one, the CDC, doctors, or even the oceanographers know where it came from or what to do about it. The situation is totally out of control, absolute chaos.
